Nation
Posted on Feb 4, 2009 in BooksSometime before Christmas I read Nation by Terry Pratchett. This is Pratchett’s first non-Discworld book in a while and it was interesting to read him take on a different kind of characters in another environment. The book takes in a fictional world but has strong roots to our reality most likely during the early 1800s and follows the story of Mau a young man who looses his home and family during a flood caused by a storm on the island he lives on. He then meets Daphne whom he refers to as Ghost Girl because she is white (made out to be English) while he and everyone he has ever known have dark skin. The book then follows a story of how they interact and learn each others language as Mau grows into a leader for the survivors of the flood from neighbouring islands.
This is a interesting book and a rather quick read with great characters which all have deep personalities and feel very authentic. I can recommend this book to anyone, both Pratchett fans and non-Pratchett fans. Note however that this is not Discworld and will not feel like reading a Discworld book, it has it’s quirky moments similar to Discworld books but it reads very differently.
