Odd Thomas

My dad bought Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas, which is the first book in the Odd series, a few years ago. Although I’ve been a fan of Koontz for years I never got into the Odd series because it had been hyped as being so good and I tend to take all hype with a pinch of salt. But lacking a new book to read on the tube recently I decided to go for it.

Odd Thomas starts off slowly giving you a chance to get aquatinted with the character of Odd Thomas who is a young man living in the small town of Pico Mundo. Odd is a pretty normal guy living in his small town in southern California but he has the gift of being able to see ghosts. He is also able to see shadow creatures (bodachs) which seem to feed on the misfortune of people and gather around people or places before something terrible happens to them. Odd uses his abilities to help the local sheriff solve cases and prevent numerous events from happening. When a man that seems to have a huge amount of bodachs following him around shows up in Pico Mundo Odd goes to investigate but really doesn’t like what he discovers…

Odd Thomas captured my interest while reading it but it’s quite unevenly paced and seems to go from “Man I can’t put the book down”-phases to “Man is this chapter ever going to end”-phases quite frequently. But overall it’s good and I plan on reading the other books in the series once I have time.

Since you can get a used copy on Amazon for £0.01 why not pick it up?
