Playing Japanissa

I tried out a number of really good games a week back, three of them Japanese and one English one.

The first game I played was Rogue Galaxy a new RPG from Level 5. Since it’s in Japanese I’m not to sure on the details of the story but it seems you are a rogue or a mercenary on a desert planet. The graphics are cel-shaded 3D and look really stunning. The setting seems to be a steampunk futuristic type and the battle system is simply wonderful it has a quick fighting style where you get into random battles in the same setting that you are in at the moment which is pretty cool and seems a bit like FFXII will be. I really look forward to this one to come out in English it looks really good and will be a nice followup to Level 5′s last RPG which I’m currently playing (Dragon Quest VIII).

Tales of the Abyss is the latest game in the wonderful series started by Tales of Phantasia all those years ago. The game seems to use the same engine that Tales of Legandia used to a key but the battle system has been modified in a small way but it’s hardly noticeable. I wasn’t sure on the story at all and had no idea how to play the game since I couldn’t find out what to do next.

Ryu ga Gotoku which loosely translates to Like a Dragon is a action adventure game where you play an agent for a Japanese underworld organization. The story starts off with you just out of prison and find himself in a search for a disappeared girl which has ties to the underworld. The game is filled with pretty cool fighting scenes but the only problem that they have is that they seem to get kind of repetitive pretty quickly. I think I’ll give this one another try if it comes out in English.

The last game I tried out was Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows which is a basic remake of the classic arcade game. The gameplay is pretty dull and repetitive much like the original (that was fine back when it was new but not today) but the story is actually pretty interesting and the game is a okay playthrough if you are looking for a no brainer brawler to play in co-op with a mate.
