Tiny bits of snow vs London

When I got back home from Tough Guy yesterday (more on that later) it started to snow in London like it had been in Wolverhampton where I’d been. It snowed considerably for England but I didn’t pay much attention to it since it wasn’t that much compared to what I’ve seen.

However when I woke up this morning I was greeted with the news that the whole of England had grounded to a halt because of some pansy amount of snow. All bus transport was down because I dunno they couldn’t be bothered to clear the roads or something… most of the London Underground and national rail services were suspended or partially suspended through out the day and same for airports. This basically meant that no one could get anywhere and the results were that most places where closed down. The FT reports that 20% of the workforce did not turn up to work for the day and most businesses were running at 50% capacity. The total cost of the snow day to business is approximated at around 1 billion pounds….

School was also out today, there were no classes taught at Imperial College and most of it’s facilities were closed including all dining so the PHDs that showed up to work were not able to buy anything to eat and had no access to the library.

This all sounds terrible but the fact is that there really isn’t much snow out at all… there is maybe 5-6cm of snow. I can’t see how this was enough to bring the whole city to a halt. I mean how can this much snow be enough to stop all those trains:

Some more pictures, see it’s not much snow at all:
