Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS

When I decided to move to London I thought about what I would do on all those numerous train rides I’d have to take. At first I thought I’d just read books and listen to music but I felt maybe there was something else I could do with my time. So to have something utterly pointless and fun to do I bought a Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS is the ultimate handheld for anyone of the NES generation. The Nintendo DS has a huge library of titles for everyone, my favourites being role playing games and puzzle games the DS really does a good job fulfilling my needs. If the DS game catalog is not enough for you then there is the option of getting one of the flash charts which allows you to run home-brew software. With the flash chart you can run old NES, Super NES, Genesis/Mega-Drive, Gameboy, NeoGeo and more platforms. This is truly the nostalgia machine. You can even run ScummVM on it so you can play those old Monkey Island and other LucasArts point and click adventure games.

When I first got the machine I started out my trip to the world of nostalgia by getting the remake of Final Fantasy IV. FF IV was originally released for the Super Nintendo back in 1991. I first played and finished it back in ‘95 or ‘96 but wanted to replay it since most of the plot had been lost to me in the past decade. The game is still fun and there have been some additions to the gameplay which are interesting and make it a better game overall. The biggest change is that the game has been remade in primitive super deformed 3D which makes it quite visually appealing for todays audience. You can see the changes below:

Another game that really grabbed my attention was Professor Layton and the Curious Village which is an amazingly good puzzle game, mixed with adventuring. The puzzles in the game are very varied and extremely fun. It’s really really hard to put this game down once you get started, which my sister can give evidence to since she almost finished in the short while she was here when she came to visit me before christmas.

The Nintendo DS is a great choice for those that want a little bit of gaming to fill those times you have nothing else to do while on the move (trains, plains etc). Grab yours today, the 100 million owners to date can’t all be wrong.
