Torchwood – Children of Earth

Torchwood is a BBC television series about a British covert team that investigates and deals with supernatural and extraterrestrial problems. When I first saw the Doctor Who spin off, I wasn’t all that impressed. It had a lot to live up to since the new series of Doctor Who (post 2005) with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant in the main role were so amazing. The first two seasons of Torchwood were a mixed bag but they quickly established themselves as a sci fi series that was willing to go the extra mile. The series has always has a rather diverse cast and have proven time and time again that nothing is sacred in their storytelling as the series goes on to cover some niche topics. They also go on to setting up things in such a way that despite fan outcries no character in the series is safe and they won’t hesitate to kill them off if it makes for a good story.

The third series starts off when all the children of Earth start chanting in union a message announcing the arrival of an alien race to Earth. Something about the whole thing is off and British government officials seem to know much more than they are letting people know about the situation and as Torchwood goes on to investigate the messages they go on to try to disable or destroy the Torchwood team. It’s really hard to go into much more detail about the rest of the storyline without spoiling the whole thing but it’s sufficient to say it’s bloody awesome.

The third series is only five episodes which aired on BBC over a single week this summer with rave reviews. To accommodate those that missed it on telly or iPlayer, the series was released on DVD the week after airing.

I really recommend people see this series but continuity may well be a issue so seeing the news series of Doctor Who and the earlier Torchwood series is recommended but not required.
